This may sound too good to be true, but it works like magic. By the time a marriage reaches its breaking point, many sins and much evil have taken place within the relationship. Such evil takes its toll unless the course of wrong is reversed. Humanly speaking, it is very rare for such a situation to change. But God can do the impossible. Remember what Jesus himself said in Mark 10:27. “…with men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.” But how can this apply to a nearly broken marriage?
Many verses hold the answer. Here is one of the best. If each partner applies this verse, supernatural things will happen. The consistent application of this verse will reverse the downward flow of a failing marriage. At first glance, the verse doesn’t seem to have such an incredible ability to make such a drastic change, but it does! The verse is Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” The verse can be paraphrased as: “Be not overcome by evil’s assaults, but overcome evil through living in the sphere of goodness.”
God wants us to live in the sphere of goodness toward our spouse, regardless of how they treat us. Returning good for evil will always win. If each spouse shows kindness to the other, evil actions and their consequences will fade away. As you begin to consider how to show your spouse goodness, no matter their attitude toward you, your marriage will start to improve. Good acts and positive attitudes toward your spouse are God’s will for your life. Focus on your behavior. You must do good to your spouse, regardless of his or her response. Let them worry about their own behavior. When one partner in a marriage chooses to apply this verse, both the individual and the relationship change. God is not mocked. He will do what He promises! We need to do our part. God will keep His word and bring blessing out of hardship. Your marriage is not beyond hope because God’s Word is not beyond hope.
